Tremors Jolt Kashmir After 5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border

SRINAGAR: Panic gripped several parts of Kashmir on Saturday after tremors were felt across the region, following a 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border area.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake occurred at 6:47 AM UTC (approximately 12:17 PM IST) with its epicentre located at latitude 36.13°N and longitude 71.38°E, at a depth of 86 kilometres.

In Srinagar and other areas of the Kashmir Valley, the tremors triggered fear among residents who rushed out of their homes and workplaces.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage have been received, but the sudden shaking caused momentary chaos, especially in densely populated areas.
The tremors lasted for several seconds and were widely felt across the Valley. Residents took to social media to report the shaking, with many describing the experience as “strong enough to cause panic.”

The region, situated in a seismically active zone, frequently experiences such tremors due to tectonic movements along the Himalayan fault lines.(Agencies)
