I ended 7 unendable wars including India and Pak: Trump at UN General Assembly

President Donald Trump addressed the 80th United Nations General Assembly session, declaring that in just seven months he had accomplished what others called impossible.

He claimed that he ended seven “unendable” wars, and repeated his claim of having a played a hand in brokering truce between India and Pakistan in May this year.

Despite India firmly denying Trump’s claim, the US President has persisted with his claim, and repeated the same at the UN on Tuesday.

“In just 7 months, I have ended 7 unendable wars,” Trump told world leaders. “They said they were unendable, some were going for 31 years, one was 36 years. I ended 7 wars and in all cases they were raging with countless thousands of people being killed.”

The president went on to list conflicts he claimed to have brought to a close, including those involving Cambodia and Thailand, Serbia, the Congo and Rwanda, Pakistan and India, Israel and Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia, and Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Since May 10, when Trump announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after talks mediated by Washington, the US President has trumpeted the claim at various conferences and state addresses, the latest one being at the UN.

India has consistently maintained that the understanding with Pakistan was reached through direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two militaries ” without any foreign involvement.

In a rare public admission this month, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar echoed India’s position, telling Al Jazeera that “India never agreed to any third-party mediation” on bilateral issues. “We don’t mind third-party involvement, but India has categorically been stating it’s a bilateral matter,” Dar said.

TRUMP’S CRITICISM OF UN
Trump, who claimed to have played a role in ending seven wars, doubled down on his critics, on the United Nations. “It’s too bad I had to do these things instead of the UN doing them, and sadly, the UN did not try to help in any of them.

“I ended seven wars, dealt with leaders of each and every nations but did not even receive a phone call from the UN,” Trump said.

“All I got from the UN was an escalator that on the way up stopped right in the middle. If the First Lady (Melania Trump) wasn’t in a great shape, she would have fallen. But she’s in a great shape. We are both in a good shape,” Trump said.

Trump said there are only two things he has got from the US – a bad escalator and a broken teleprompter.

A video from the United Nations Headquarters showed that the escalator at the UN suddenly came to a halt as Trump and Melania stepped onto it.

Furthermore, the teleprompter failed as Trump was set to begin his address and the US President read his speech from paper. He joked about the two incidents in his US speech.

Trump said that the UN has tremendous potential but is not living up to it.
