Removed Hurriyat Chairman Title Under Pressure From Authorities: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Explains

Srinagar: Chief Kashmiri cleric and separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said he was compelled to remove the designation of Chairman, All Parties Hurriyat Conference from his X (formerly Twitter) handle due to pressure from authorities.

In a statement, Mirwaiz said he was informed that since all constituents of the Hurriyat Conference, including the Awami Action Committee led by him, have been banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), the Hurriyat has effectively become a banned organisation. He said he was asked to make changes to his social media profile, failing which his account would be taken down.

Mirwaiz said that at a time when public space and avenues of communication are severely restricted, social media remains one of the few platforms available to him to communicate with people, express his views, and highlight issues concerning Jammu and Kashmir to the outside world.

“Under these circumstances, it was a Hobson’s choice left to me,” he said, explaining his decision to modify his profile.
