Renowned Kashmiri singer Ghulam Nabi Bulbul passes away

Baramulla, June 11: Ghulam Nabi Bulbul, the celebrated Kashmiri singer and dancer from Batsuma, Rafiabad, passed away this morning, leaving behind a legacy that enriched the cultural tapestry of Kashmir.

Affectionately known as “Hamli Bulbul,” he was a prominent figure in the folk music scene, captivating audiences with his soulful performances and dedication to preserving Kashmiri traditions.

Born in 1949, Bulbul’s artistic journey began in his childhood, participating in school functions and gradually immersing himself in the rich musical heritage of his village.

Mentored by the legendary Khazir Mohammed Shah, he mastered various instruments, including the sarangi, and became renowned for his graceful dance performances, often balancing a glass of water on his head—a skill that earned him admiration.
Bulbul was a regular feature on Radio Kashmir since its inception in 1962, earning an A-Top grade for his performances.

He also served as a music instructor in the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Information and Public Relations, where he recorded numerous compositions that resonated with the people.

Throughout his illustrious career, Bulbul received several accolades, including the prestigious ‘Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Muhammad’ Award in 2011 for promoting Kashmiri Lok Sangeet.

The passing of Ghulam Nabi Bulbul marks the end of an era in Kashmiri folk music. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Kashmir, and he will be remembered as a torchbearer of its musical heritage.(Agencies)
