Waheed Para’s bill on regularisation of daily wagers rejected

Jammu, April 1 : The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Wednesday rejected a private member’s bill moved by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Waheed Ur Rehman Para seeking the regularisation of daily-wage and temporary workers in the Union Territory Assembly, triggering protests from the opposition PDP.

The proposed legislation aimed to provide job security and regular status to thousands of daily wagers working in various government departments, a long-pending demand raised by employees’ unions and political parties.
Following the government’s decision to reject the bill, PDP legislators staged a protest inside the House and later walked out of the Assembly in opposition to what they termed as the government’s “anti-worker” stance.

PDP members argued that the regularisation of daily wagers was a humanitarian and livelihood issue, urging the government to take a compassionate view. However, treasury bench members opposed the bill, saying the matter required a comprehensive policy decision rather than a private member’s legislation.

The walkout by PDP MLAs briefly disrupted the proceedings, highlighting sharp differences between the ruling alliance and the opposition over employment and labour rights issues.(CNS)
