Day Two of Udhampur Encounter: Heavy Firing Reported in Joffar Forest

SRINAGAR: Fresh firing resumed early Thursday morning in the ongoing encounter in the Ramnagar area of Udhampur district as security forces intensified combing operations to flush out militants believed to be hiding in the dense forest area of Joffar.

The encounter, had initially broken out on Wednesday following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of heavily armed militants suspected to be affiliated with the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) outfit.The group, reportedly comprising two to three militants, was trapped in the Joffar area, prompting a swift response from joint teams of the Army, JK Police, and paramilitary forces.

Officials said the operation continued through the night with intermittent firing. Heavy gunfire resumed at dawn on Thursday when forces advanced towards the suspected location.Firing was ongoing when last reports came in. (JKNS)
