District Hospital Kulgam lacks MRI, TORCH & Thyroid Profile Test facilities; patients suffer

Aadil Bashir Kulgam, May 28 : Patients are suffering due to the non-availability of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), torch and thyroid profile test facilities at the District Hospital in Kulgam.Talking to our correspondent Aadil Bashir, patients said they are forced to visit private diagnostic centres in the absence of these facilities.Mudasir Ahmad, a patient from Kulgam, said that doctors advised him to go for an MRI, but in the absence of the facility at District Hospital Kulgam, patients like him are forced to visit private diagnostic centres. He said that it costs Rs 6000 for a patient to undergo an MRI at a private diagnostic centre, but there are dozens of patients who can’t afford it.

Patients said that poor patients are suffering mainly as they are unable to bear the expenses of the scan; hence, their treatment gets delayed.A doctor posted at District Hospital Kulgam, who wished not to be named, said they urgently need an MRI facility at the District Hospital in the face of its need to scan patients before treatment.MRI is a diagnostic powerhouse that illuminates the inner workings of the human body with unparalleled precision.

This extraordinary technology harnesses the potency of a magnetic field and radio waves to craft intricate visualisations of internal structures. It seems the query is referring to a situation where a district hospital in Kulgam, where patients from 231 villages came for treatment, is lacking in diagnostic facilities, specifically the ability to perform TORCH tests, which are crucial for screening for certain infections in pregnant women. The lack of this facility leads to health concerns for the population.

This lack of diagnostic capabilities can lead to delays in identifying and treating infections in pregnant women, potentially impacting the health of both the mother and the child, said a pregnant lady, Samreena Jan..Without TORCH tests, it becomes difficult to assess the risk of infection transmission from the mother to the foetus during pregnancy, which can have serious health consequences for the baby.Similarly, lack of readily available thyroid profile tests at the District Hospital Kulgam can cause significant problems for patients, potentially hindering early diagnosis and treatment of thyroid disorders.

This can lead to individuals experiencing persistent symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, and mood swings without knowing the underlying cause.Patients are supposed to pay a very minimal cost for these tests, which are quite expensive in the market.

In certain cases, the credibility of private testing facilities has remained questionable. They requested the concerned authorities, particularly Health Minister Skeena Itoo, to set these facilities in the hospital so that poor people won’t suffer.
