Srinagar: Strict restrictions remained in force across the Kashmir Valley for the second consecutive day on Tuesday following widespread protests against the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Authorities had shut educational institutions for two days and throttled mobile internet speeds on Monday as precautionary measures after large-scale demonstrations erupted across the valley. On Tuesday, officials cancelled the movement of security force convoys in an effort to prevent further escalation.
To avoid tensions, authorities also decided not to deploy road opening parties of the security forces on Tuesday. In several areas, protests had turned violent, leading to clashes between demonstrators and security personnel.
At least 14 people, including six security personnel, were injured during Monday’s protests in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said that 75 rallies were held across various parts of the Kashmir Valley, while a few demonstrations were also reported in the Jammu region.
This marks the first time since August 2019 that protests of such a large scale have taken place in Kashmir.
Authorities said additional security personnel have been deployed, and the situation is being closely monitored to maintain law and order.
