Centre should reconsider kashmir policy: Mirwaiz

SRINAGAR: Addressing media representatives in Budgam during a Seerat Conference organised by Anjuman-e-Sharie Shian, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that lasting peace in any conflict zone is possible only when justice is delivered to the people involved.

Expressing solidarity with Palestine, Mirwaiz said, “We eagerly want the ceasefire to be implemented and the genocide of Palestinians to end. But beyond a temporary cessation of war, what is required is a genuine, fair and lasting peace process.” He stressed that the aspirations of Palestinians for their land, dignity and an independent state must form the basis of any settlement, adding that selective approaches that ignore justice only perpetuate conflict.

Turning to Ladakh, Mirwaiz expressed sorrow over the recent loss of lives, accusing the Government of India of “complicating matters further by being harsh on the people.” He said peace cannot be enforced through coercion and called for dialogue to replace confrontation.

Commenting on Kashmir, Mirwaiz voiced concern over his repeated house arrests, restrictions on religious and social organisations, and curbs on the media. “We have always believed in peaceful engagement with dignity. The Government of India must rethink its policy on Jammu and Kashmir, as issues cannot be resolved through force and control of narrative,” he said.

On the question of Waqf properties, he urged that religious institutions be managed autonomously by the community, warning that interference in such matters hurts public sentiment and creates unnecessary friction.
