Trump Threatens 25% Tariff on Countries Doing Business with Iran

Washington, Jan 13: US President Donald Trump has announced that any country doing business with Iran will face a 25% tariff on all trade with the United States, escalating pressure on Tehran amid widespread anti-government protests.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Monday, Trump said the measure would take effect immediately, declaring that the decision was “final and conclusive.” He did not provide details on the legal basis for the move or clarify whether it would apply to all of Iran’s trading partners.

Iran has long been under US sanctions, with major export destinations including China, the United Arab Emirates, and India. Tariffs would be paid by US importers of goods from affected countries.

The White House has not released official documentation of the policy, and officials declined to comment. China reacted strongly, opposing what it described as unilateral sanctions and warning that trade wars have no winners.

The announcement comes as Iran experiences its largest anti-government protests in years, following severe economic hardship and political unrest. Human rights groups report hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests amid a harsh government crackdown involving mass detentions and internet shutdowns.

While Trump has said diplomacy remains an option, the White House confirmed that military action, including airstrikes, is among the possibilities under consideration. Iran has stated it is keeping communication channels open with Washington.

The development adds further strain to global trade relations as Trump’s tariff policies face legal challenges in the US Supreme Court.
