Srinagar, Jan 22: In a shocking incident, a 65-year-old woman, Rashida Begum of Nowshera area in Srinagar, was allegedly brutally murdered by her domestic help on Thursday while her son was in Saudi Arabia performing Umrah.
According to officials, Rashida was alone at home at the time of the incident as her husband was at his shop in Lal Chowk. The accused domestic help allegedly attacked her with a bat, leaving her unconscious, and later slit her throat before fleeing with her mobile phone.
Rashida’s son-in-law, Shafat, said she was in regular contact with his wife till around 11 am. “After lunch, when my wife and children went to her house, they found her lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit,” he said.
He added that Rashida’s son, who was in Saudi Arabia, accessed the CCTV footage linked to his phone after being informed and helplessly watched the incident unfold. Her husband returned home after being alerted about the murder.
A neighbour said the incident came to light around 4 pm, triggering panic and chaos in the area. Eyewitnesses reportedly saw the domestic help assaulting the woman before killing her.
Police said the accused was traced using the mobile phone taken from the victim after the murder. “The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway,” police said.
