CWC Srinagar Issues Advisory Restricting Interviews, Filming of Children by Media, Content Creators

Srinagar, July 02 : The Child Welfare C اوommittee (CWC), Srinagar on Thursday, has issued a fresh advisory prohibiting the interviewing, filming and dissemination of videos involving children in ways that may compromise their privacy, dignity, safety or overall well-being.

According to Asian News Hub, the advisory follows a recent incident in which a school-going child was interviewed outside school premises and the video was widely circulated on social media, exposing the child to public scrutiny and potential psychological, emotional and social harm.

The CWC said no child below the age of 18 should be interviewed, filmed or recorded in a manner that violates the child’s best interests. It directed that media persons, journalists, digital content creators, vloggers and members of the public must not approach or interview school-going children in or around educational institutions without the informed consent of parents or guardians and, where applicable, prior permission from the concerned school authorities.

The advisory also states that children must not be encouraged to comment on political, controversial, legal or other sensitive issues that could expose them to public criticism, online abuse or emotional distress.

Further, it prohibits the publication or dissemination of any photograph, video or interview of a child if it is likely to prejudice the child’s rights, privacy, dignity, safety or welfare.

Educational institutions have been asked to sensitise students, parents and staff about safe interactions with the media and digital platforms, and to immediately report any unauthorised media engagement involving children to the Child Welfare Committee and law enforcement agencies.

The CWC warned that violations affecting the rights and welfare of children may be referred to the Cyber Police or other competent authorities for legal action, including the removal of objectionable online content wherever permissible under law. (ANH)
