Ramban, August 7: A Mahindra Scorpio that allegedly breached a police checkpoint on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) in the Chanderkote area of Ramban district was intercepted near Dhalwas after police opened fire in an attempt to stop it.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. when the Scorpio (registration number JK02AK-1743) ignored repeated warnings and sped through the checkpoint towards Jammu. Police fired a few rounds at the vehicle, but it continued driving before being stopped several kilometres away near Dhalwas.
The driver was taken into custody for questioning. During the initial investigation, police said the detained individual is suspected to have been involved in smuggling-related activities. Further interrogation is underway.
Following the incident, the district police, CRPF and the Army launched a large-scale search operation. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramban Arun Gupta, who supervised the operation, confirmed that the vehicle had been seized and that the investigation is continuing.
Security has been tightened along NH-44 due to the ongoing Amarnath Yatra and upcoming Independence Day celebrations. Police said all aspects of the incident are being investigated, and further details will be shared as the probe progresses.
