Divorce Case: Supreme Court Directs Omar Abdullah, Wife To Resolve Marital Issues

New Delhi: In a major development, the Supreme Court has directed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and his estranged wife Payal Abdullah to meet and make an attempt to resolve their matrimonial issues amicably.

The court was hearing a petition filed by Omar Abdullah seeking a divorce. During the proceedings, a bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and K Vinod Chandran was informed that previous mediation efforts in the case had been unsuccessful.

Despite this, the bench emphasised the importance of giving the couple another opportunity to settle their disputes, stating, “Although the mediation in this case has failed, but purely in order to give another chance, the parties shall sit together and make an effort to resolve their disputes. Let the efforts be made within three weeks.”

The court scheduled the next hearing for May 7 and previously requested a response from Payal regarding her husband’s divorce petition.

Earlier, on December 12, 2023, the Delhi High Court had dismissed Omar’s plea for divorce, stating that there was no merit in his appeal and upholding the 2016 family court order, which had also refused to grant a divorce decree.(PTI)
