Mehbooba Mufti urges GoI to help ailing Jamaat leader in central jail Srinagar

Srinaga: Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has once again asked the Government of India to take care of prisoners’ health and safety. This time, she spoke about Dr Hamid Fayaz Ameer, a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami, who is in Central Jail Srinagar and is said to be seriously ill.

In a recent tweet, Mehbooba said Dr Fayaz needs urgent surgery and the government should look at his case with kindness and humanity. She said being in jail does not mean a person loses their basic rights, and the state must care for every citizen, especially those in custody.

“Another family is plunged into anguish as distressing reports emerge from the Central Jail Srinagar regarding the deteriorating health of Dr. Hamid Fayaz Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami. His condition is critical and he urgently requires surgery. Even behind bars a person does not cease to be a human being nor does the State’s responsibility end at the prison gates. It is a moral and constitutional duty to ensure the well being of every citizen especially those in custody and awaiting trial. Earnestly appeal to the Government of India to take a compassionate and humane view of Dr. Hamid Fayaz’s condition,” Mehbooba wrote tagging the Home Minister of India Amit Shah.

Just a few days ago, Mehbooba had supported the daughter of jailed Hurriyat leader Shabir Shah. His daughter, Sehar Shah, wrote to prison officials seeking immediate medical care for her ailing father, who has spent nearly four decades in prison without conviction.

“This is not political. This is not anti-national. This is not against any country, institution, or government. This is only about my father’s life. His health. His right to be treated with dignity,” she wrote in a post shared online tagging Home Ministry of India and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.
