Curfew relaxed in Leh, shops allowed to open for limited hours

Leh, Oct 3: Authorities in Leh on Friday continued to ease curfew restrictions, permitting markets and shops to operate between 10 AM and 6 PM.

The decision follows days of security measures imposed after the September 24 incident that resulted in civilian casualties during protests.

Residents were seen visiting markets and purchasing essential items as shops reopened after several days of closure. Public movement increased in parts of the city, although security personnel remained stationed at several locations.

Officials stated that the decision to allow partial reopening was taken after reviewing the current situation.

According to police and administrative sources, no major law and order incidents have been reported since the initial violence, prompting a phased relaxation of restrictions.

Markets had been closed since the unrest that began late last month. The incident, involving police action during protests, led to the deaths of four individuals. Following this, curfew was imposed across Leh city and surrounding areas, along with a suspension of mobile internet services.

Local administration has urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement and follow the guidelines in place. Officials reiterated that any violation could result in reimposition of curfew or other restrictions.(KNS)
