Tariq Rahman Sworn In as Bangladesh Prime Minister

Dhaka, February 17: BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, days after leading his party to a decisive victory in the general elections.

President administered the oath of office to the 60-year-old leader at the South Plaza of the , marking a departure from the long-standing tradition of holding the ceremony at Bangabhaban, the official presidential residence.

Earlier in the day, newly elected Members of Parliament were sworn in by Chief Election Commissioner at the National Parliament building.

In a related development, the BNP declined to take a second oath as members of the proposed “Constitution Reform Commission,” which is linked to a referendum held simultaneously with the general election. Party leaders stated that the council’s provisions have not yet been incorporated into the Constitution, and therefore a second oath was not appropriate.

According to one interpretation of the referendum outcome, which received a majority ‘yes’ vote on February 12, the entire Parliament is expected to function as a “Constitution Reform Commission” for 180 days. However, concerns remain over how the responsibilities of constitutional reform will be balanced with regular parliamentary duties during this period.

The developments signal the beginning of a significant political phase in Bangladesh, with constitutional reforms and governance priorities likely to shape the new administration’s agenda.
