Washington, Mar 9: US Senator , a close ally of , has warned of possible “consequences” if the kingdom does not join US military operations against .
In a post on social media, Graham questioned whether the United States should move forward with a long-discussed defense agreement with Saudi Arabia, saying it was difficult to justify such a partnership while American soldiers were dying in the ongoing war with Iran.
Graham also claimed that the US embassy in was being evacuated due to continued Iranian attacks on Saudi territory. He criticized Saudi Arabia for not participating militarily despite what he described as a shared interest in countering Iran.
He further urged countries of the to play a greater role in the conflict, stating that the war was taking place in their region.
The tensions come after the United States launched airstrikes on Iran on February 28 under , in coordination with Israel. The strikes reportedly killed Iran’s supreme leader and several senior officials.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on US bases and allied targets across the Middle East. According to reports, at least seven American service members have been killed and several others injured.
Casualty figures also indicate heavy losses across the region, including more than 1,200 deaths in Iran, hundreds in Lebanon, and casualties in Israel and Gulf states.
The US State Department said more than 36,000 Americans have been evacuated from the Middle East since the conflict escalated in late February.
