Srinagar, March 19 :India will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Saturday, March 21, as the crescent moon marking the beginning of Shawwal was not sighted anywhere in the country on Thursday evening, religious authorities confirmed.
Mufti Adil of the Ru’yat-e-Hilal Committee at Jama Masjid announced that the moon was not visible, meaning the holy month of Ramadan will complete 30 days. Consequently, Eid-ul-Fitr will be observed across India on Saturday.
The announcement was also endorsed by Naib Shahi Imam Syed Shaban Bukhari from Delhi’s Jama Masjid, who confirmed that the festival would be celebrated on March 21.
Similarly, Maulana Khalid Rasheed, Chairman of the Lucknow Islamic Center, stated that since the Shawwal crescent was not sighted, Eid will be observed on Saturday.
The Deccan Muslim Ulema Council also issued a statement supporting the decision, saying that moon-sighting reports from across the country confirmed that the crescent was not visible.
With the confirmation, Muslims across India will now offer Eid-ul-Fitr prayers on Saturday morning, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal.
