Washington / Islamabad, April 15: Peace negotiations between the United States and Iran may resume within the next two days, with Pakistan’s capital Islamabad emerging as the likely venue for renewed diplomatic engagement.
US President indicated that discussions are progressing and suggested that Islamabad is being preferred due to the mediation efforts of Pakistan’s Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, whom he praised for doing a “fantastic job.”
The previous round of talks, which lasted nearly 21 hours over the weekend, ended without a breakthrough. US Vice President reportedly walked out, stating that Iran had failed to provide a firm commitment to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
Following the stalled negotiations, the United States escalated pressure by imposing a naval blockade on Iranian ports in the Gulf, aiming to restrict economic activity. In response, disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz raised global concerns, as the vital waterway handles a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas supply.
The tensions contributed to a spike in global oil prices, briefly pushing them above $100 per barrel, though prices eased slightly amid optimism over a possible second round of talks.
Diplomatic sources suggest that key sticking points remain, particularly over Iran’s uranium enrichment program. The US has reportedly demanded a 20-year suspension, while Iran is said to be offering a shorter timeframe and rejecting any complete halt.
Meanwhile, regional diplomatic activity has intensified, with officials from several Middle Eastern countries engaging in consultations in Islamabad, as Pakistan positions itself as a central mediator in efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
