Mehbooba Urges PDP MLAs To Ensure Resolution Seeking Holiday For ‘July 13 Martyrs’ Passed In House

Srinagar March 2:The 13th July holds significant historical importance in Kashmir. It marks the day in 1931 when 22 Kashmiris were martyred during a protest against the oppressive rule of the Dogra Mahrajas monarchy. These martyrs are remembered for their resistance against colonial and autocratic rule, symbolizing the Kashmiris’ long-standing struggle for democracy and constitutional rights.

However, the day, which was traditionally observed as a holiday to honor the martyrs, faced a gradual erasure from public memory, especially under UT administration. The holiday was eventually revoked, reflecting a deliberate attempt to downplay its significance.

This decision sparked widespread resentment and is seen as part of a broader effort to alter the region’s political narrative and suppress historical symbols of cry for democracy. Restoring recognition of this day holds deep symbolic value for Kashmiris, reaffirming their history and crave for democratic rights.

One of the PDP MLA has already made the move and submitted his resolution on party directions to put facts right and seek restoration of 13 July as state gazetted holiday again as it was pre 5th August 2019.(KNS)
