Anantnag woman abducted, murdered in Srinagar, accused arrested

Days after a young girl from Kokernag was reported missing, police have recovered her body from a house in Lawaypora, Srinagar, and arrested the accused, a 31-year-old man from the same area.

The girl, whose identity has been withheld, was reported missing on March 16.

Her family had approached the police, fearing something was wrong. “She left home that morning and never returned. We searched everywhere before filing a report,” said a relative.

Following the complaint, Kokernag police launched an investigation and traced the girl’s last known location. “Technical evidence pointed towards a man identified as Altaf Mir, son of Nissar Ahmad Mir, a resident of Lawaypora, Srinagar,” an official said.

Mir was detained for questioning, during which he allegedly confessed to the crime. Based on his disclosure, police recovered the girl’s body from his house.

Initially, a case had been registered under Sections 87 and 49 of the BNS, but after the body’s recovery, Sections 64 and 103 were added.

The news of the girl’s death has left her family and neighbors in shock. “She was a kind-hearted person, always smiling. We never thought something like this could happen to her,” said a neighbor in Kokernag.

Residents of Kokernag have called for strict punishment for the accused. “This is heartbreaking. Crimes like these cannot be ignored. Authorities must ensure justice,” said another local.

The police have sent the body for postmortem and forensic examination, and further investigations are underway.

“Every aspect of the case is being examined, and justice will be served,” an official assured.
