Sajad Lone Criticises Police Verification Process, Seeks Reforms

SRINAGAR: Peoples Conference president Sajad Gani Lone on Wednesday criticised the existing verification procedures and called on the JK government to clarify its stance on employees dismissed during central rule in Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking in the Legislative Assembly during discussions on grants for departments headed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Lone, said the current police verification procedure needs to be changed.

“I was shocked to find questions in the verification form such as, ‘Where have you gone in the last five years?’ and others like, ‘Who is your father-in-law?’ and ‘Who is your mother-in-law?’ I believe that changing these procedures lies within the powers of the Chief Minister, and he should do the same,” he said.

Lone also urged the government to clarify its position on terminated employees.

“The employees were terminated during their (BJP) rule without being given an opportunity to be heard. Would you (Govt) review their termination? Do you (Govt) have a roadmap to reinstate them or provide them with an opportunity to defend themselves?” he said.

Lone expressed concern over the low number of Economically Weaker Section (EWS) certificates being issued in Kashmir and urged the Revenue authorities to explain the reasons for their rejection.

“Our per capita income and economic indicators are the same, yet 27,000 certificates have been issued in Jammu, while only 2,700 have been issued in Kashmir. Tehsildars should be asked to explain why EWS certificates are being rejected here when all indicators are the same and we are part of the same state,” he said.

He also called on the government to address the concerns of students studying in Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT) schools.

“The students studying in FAT schools are not allowed to sit in examinations. I appeal to the Education Minister and the Chief Minister to intervene in the matter,” he said. (KNO)
