Mirwaiz Umar Condemns Weekly House Arrest, Calls It “Arbitrary and Sectarian

Srinagar, Apr 18: Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly condemned his recurring house detention every Friday, calling it an arbitrary restriction aimed at silencing his voice and weakening Muslim institutions in the Kashmir Valley.

Taking to social media handle X, the Mirwaiz stated that the clampdown is part of a larger agenda to marginalize the Jama Masjid Srinagar and the Mirwaiz institution itself, which have historically been central to the spiritual and political life of the region.

He described the action as an attempt to inflict “collective grief” on the Muslim community and those who resist authoritarian policies.

Despite filing a petition in theHigh Court seeking relief, the case remains pending. “In such times, patience remains our only strength,” he wrote, urging continued resilience. The repeated restrictions on his movement have drawn criticism from human rights groups and civil society organizations, he added. (KNS)
