Mirwaiz says authorities placed Him under house arrest ahead of martyrs day

Srinagar, July 11 : Mirwaiz Kashmir Umar Farooq was placed under house arrest, preventing him from delivering his Friday sermon at the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar.

In a statement issued to KNS, Mirwaiz said that he was disallowed from going to the mosque and alleged the move was due to concerns that he would mention the martyrs of July 13, 1931, during his sermon.

He said the sacrifices made on that day, and those since, remain a part of Kashmir’s collective memory.

“No living nation can forget the sacrifice of life of its martyrs against tyranny and injustice,” the statement said.

Mirwaiz appealed to the authorities to remove restrictions and allow people to peacefully pay homage to those who lost their lives on July 13, 1931.

He added that, if permitted, the traditional visit to the martyrs’ graveyard would take place after Zuhr prayers on July 13.(KNS)
