Srinagar: Authorities on Wednesday said water levels in the Jhelum river at Ram Munshi Bagh, Srinagar, have crossed the alert threshold amid the prevailing spell of heavy rains across Jammu and Kashmir.
An official statement from the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir read that field teams are closely monitoring the situation and contingency measures have been put in place. People have been advised to stay away from water bodies and exercise utmost caution.
“In view of the prevailing situation, the general public is asked to contact the UT Level Emergency Operation Centre at 0194-2502254 and 0194-2950767/10170 for any assistance,” the statement said.
Jammu and Kashmir has been reeling under incessant rainfall for the past two days, which has triggered flash floods and landslides across the Union Territory. At least 34 people have died so far, including 32 in a massive landslide along the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage route in Reasi district.
In Jammu, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded 368 mm of rainfall on Tuesday, one of the heaviest in years. Overflowing rivers — including the Chenab, Tawi, Jhelum, and Basantar— have inundated low-lying areas, while several key bridges and roads have suffered extensive damage.
Authorities have evacuated thousands of people to safer areas in Jammu division, with the Army, NDRF, and SDRF leading rescue and relief operations.
Communication networks, power supply, and water services remain severely disrupted in many parts of the Union Territory.
The Jhelum, considered Kashmir’s lifeline, has now crossed the danger mark at Sangam in Anantnag and is rising steadily in Srinagar, heightening flood fears in the Valley.
