Govt directs clearance of flood debris from farmlands in J&K

Srinagar, Sep 2: In the wake of recent flash floods and landslides that caused heavy damage across Jammu and Kashmir, the Directorate of Geology and Mining has issued directions for immediate clearance of silt, sand and other debris deposited on agricultural and proprietary lands.

The circular issued by the Director of Geology and Mining, S P Rukwal, stated that massive deposits of nalla mukh, sand, silt and bajri have accumulated in farmlands and along riverbanks due to the natural calamities.

The deposition, the department noted, has not only damaged property but also rendered cultivable land unfit for use.To mitigate the impact on local populations, District Mineral Officers have been directed to facilitate removal and lifting of debris material from affected proprietary and agricultural lands in accordance with the provisions of J&K Minor Mineral Concession and Mining Rules, 2016.

The order also emphasises that clearance must be carried out without causing disturbance to the ground surface by pits or trenches.

The Directorate underlined that the removal of debris is essential for safeguarding agriculture and livelihoods in flood-hit districts, and that DMOs will be held accountable for any violations of the instructions. (KNT)
