New Delhi, September 9, 2025: NDA candidate and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as the new Vice President of India, defeating Opposition nominee Justice B. Sudershan Reddy in a direct contest.
According to Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody, Radhakrishnan secured 452 first-preference votes, comfortably crossing the required majority mark of 377. Justice Sudershan Reddy received 300 first-preference votes. With this, Radhakrishnan won by a margin of 152 votes.
The vice-presidential polling began at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and concluded at 5 p.m., followed by counting at 6 p.m. Out of the total strength of 781 MPs in Parliament (542 in Lok Sabha and 239 in Rajya Sabha, with six seats vacant), 13 MPs abstained from voting. The abstentions included seven MPs from the Biju Janata Dal, four from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, one from the Shiromani Akali Dal, and one independent.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first to cast his vote, followed by senior leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda, and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated Radhakrishnan on his victory, praising his “grassroots leadership and profound knowledge of administration” and expressing confidence that he would strengthen parliamentary democracy as custodian of the Rajya Sabha.
With this win, CP Radhakrishnan takes charge as the 15th Vice President of India and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
