PM Modi Speaks to Tarique Rahman After BNP’s Landslide Victory in Bangladesh Elections

New Delhi, February 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke with Tarique Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), after his party secured a sweeping victory in Bangladesh’s general elections.

In a post on social media platform X, Modi congratulated Rahman on the BNP’s impressive performance in the polls. He reaffirmed India’s continued support for Bangladesh and highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between the two neighboring countries.

“Delighted to speak with Mr. Tarique Rahman. I congratulated him on the remarkable victory in the Bangladesh elections,” Modi said. He added that India remains committed to working together for peace, progress, and prosperity in the region.

BNP Secures Massive Majority
According to reports, the BNP and its allies won 212 out of 297 seats announced so far, with the BNP alone securing 209 seats.
The 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 77 seats, while smaller parties and independent candidates captured the remaining seats.

The election marks a significant political shift following the 2024 uprising that led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Her party, the Awami League, did not participate in this election.

International Reactions
The United States congratulated Rahman and the BNP on what it described as a “historic victory.” China and Pakistan also extended their congratulations.

Former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Veena Sikri described the outcome as a victory for democracy and for the people of Bangladesh.

The voting process was largely peaceful, and the country has remained calm since the announcement of the results.
