No theatrics, only consistency: Ruhullah Mehdi sets condition for J&K statehood struggle

Srinagar, June 4: National Conference senior leader and Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah on Thursday said that the fight for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and constitutional rights must be driven by consistency and credibility rather than symbolic gestures or political theatrics.

Speaking to a news agency, Ruhullah said the credibility of the political leadership was at stake as people were increasingly questioning their commitment to the cause.

“If there is no sustainability and consistency in the struggle, it will turn into mere theatrics,” he said.

Ruhullah also claimed that he was not invited to the National Conference meeting held on Wednesday. He stressed that any serious movement for the restoration of statehood and constitutional guarantees required a clear roadmap and extensive outreach across Kashmir and New Delhi.

“People cannot be convinced by a one-day protest. A roadmap must be prepared, the entire Kashmir must be mobilised, and a sustained movement should be built,” he said.

He further called for putting pressure on the Prime Minister’s Office and creating momentum both inside and outside Parliament.

Referring to Ladakh’s united political campaigns, Ruhullah said Kashmir’s leadership should learn from that example and come together for a common cause.

“If all political parties are sincere, they should set aside their political identities and unite on a single platform. A democratic and peaceful movement should continue until the rights taken away in 2019 are restored,” he said.

The MP said he would be willing to take the first step by resigning from Parliament if a common movement was launched.

“I will be the first to resign from Parliament. Representatives should emerge from a common movement platform rather than party platforms until our constitutional rights are restored,” he said.

Ruhullah also criticised the tendency of political parties to unite briefly before returning to electoral competition, saying such behaviour weakens collective efforts.

“If parties are serious, they must put electoral politics aside and focus entirely on the movement. People will trust such efforts only when they see sincerity and consistency,” he added.

The remarks come a day after the announced a protest in New Delhi on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and constitutional guarantees. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by at .
