New Delhi, June 8: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah on Monday sought the support of INDIA Bloc partners for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, urging opposition parties to join the National Conference’s proposed protest in New Delhi during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Addressing leaders at the INDIA Bloc meeting in the national capital, Omar Abdullah informed alliance members about the National Conference’s decision to launch a campaign demanding the restoration of statehood and invited constituent parties to participate in the protest.
According to party sources, Omar Abdullah emphasized that the demand for statehood restoration goes beyond political affiliations and reflects the democratic aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
He appealed to leaders of INDIA Bloc parties to stand in solidarity with the people of the Union Territory and support the National Conference’s planned demonstration in Delhi.
Omar also informed the meeting that the National Conference would formally reach out to opposition leaders and parties to seek their participation and backing for the campaign.
The development comes days after the National Conference announced plans to stage a protest in New Delhi on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session, pressing for the restoration of full statehood and constitutional guarantees for Jammu and Kashmir.
Statehood restoration has emerged as a key political issue for the ruling National Conference, which has consistently maintained that restoring full statehood is essential to fulfilling commitments made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
The INDIA Bloc meeting was attended by senior opposition leaders from across the country and focused on a range of political and parliamentary issues ahead of the forthcoming Parliament session.
