Srinagar, July 16: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday voiced concern over recent developments in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), alleging that the functioning of the cricket body was being undermined and urging the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to step in.
In a statement posted on social media, Mufti said the JKCA should remain free from politics, corruption, and regional bias. She added that she had expected greater transparency and fairness under the leadership of BCCI president Mithun Manhas.
Mufti alleged that the democratically elected JKCA president, Javid Khatib, along with several local cricket clubs, was being sidelined without due process. She further claimed that some clubs were allegedly being targeted and removed because of their Kashmiri identity.
Warning against regional polarization in sports, the former Chief Minister said cricket should never become a Jammu-versus-Kashmir issue. “Let cricket, not identity, decide who represents India,” she said.
Mufti appealed to the BCCI and its office-bearers to intervene and ensure that due process, transparency, and fairness are maintained in the functioning of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association.
