Anantnag, December 19, 2025:The District Magistrate, Anantnag, has ordered the detention of Anwar Jan alias Anwar Phamda, a resident of Kokernag, under the Jammu & Kashmir Public Safety Act (PSA), 1978, citing concerns related to public order.
According to official records, the detention order was issued after reviewing a detailed report submitted by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Anantnag. Following the order, he has been shifted to District Jail Bhaderwah.
Anwar Jan, who was associated with the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), Kashmir, had contested the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024 from Assembly Constituency 42-ST Kokernag. He secured nearly 7,000 votes but lost the election by a margin of around 11,000 votes.
As per information available in his self-declared election affidavit, Anwar Jan is named in multiple FIRs registered across different police stations, including Larnoo, Pahalgam, Samba, Nagrota, Chenani and Ramban, spanning several years. Many of these cases are shown as pending before judicial courts, while no conviction has been recorded so far.
The administration has stated that the PSA detention has been taken as a preventive step, based on the overall material placed before the detaining authority, with the aim of maintaining public order and peace in the district.
