Srinagar, Dec 19: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday accused BJP leaders, including Union Minister Giriraj Singh, of wanting to turn India into a “Kaurav Rajya” where women are disrespected.
Speaking to reporters in Srinagar, Mufti said India is a secular country founded on the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, but leaders like Giriraj Singh are undermining those values. Referring to the Mahabharata, she said she was not talking about “Ram Rajya” but a “Kaurav Rajya,” recalling the humiliation of Draupadi as a symbol of disrespect towards women.
Her remarks came after Union Minister Giriraj Singh defended Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who recently sparked controversy by pulling the veil off a woman’s face during an official event in Patna. Singh had said it was up to the woman to refuse the appointment or “go to hell,” drawing widespread criticism.
Linking Singh’s remarks to the mindset of the Kauravs, Mufti said there was no respect for women in such thinking and added that she had no expectations from BJP leaders. She also said Nitish Kumar should not have acted the way he did.
Mufti welcomed the move by her daughter and PDP leader Iltija Mufti, who earlier in the day lodged a police complaint seeking registration of an FIR against the Bihar chief minister.
