The Government of India has decided to revoke the detention of climate activist , months after protests in Leh that led to his arrest.
Wangchuk had been detained under the and lodged in a jail in following violent protests in in September last year. Authorities said the detention was necessary to maintain public order after unrest in the region.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the government said it remains committed to promoting peace, stability, and mutual trust in . It added that, after due consideration, the detention of Wangchuk has been revoked with immediate effect using powers under the National Security Act.
The government also said it has been engaging with stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh to address the aspirations and concerns of the people in the region.
However, it noted that the recent atmosphere of bandhs and protests has negatively affected several sections of society, including students, job seekers, businesses, tour operators, tourists, and the overall economy of the region.
