Jhelum floodwaters enter Kursu Rajbagh lanes, panic among residents

Srinagar, Aug 27 : Panic gripped residents of Kursu Rajbagh in Srinagar after water from the river Jhelum started entering residential areas, submerging lanes and internal bilanes on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that the water level began rising rapidly in the morning, leaving them anxious.

“The lanes and bilanes are already submerged. Water has now reached our courtyards and is entering houses. People are frightened, many have shifted essential belongings to upper floors,” said Ghulam Ahmad, a local resident from Rajbagh.

Another resident said people were keeping a close watch on the situation. “Children and the elderly are the most affected. Everyone fears a repeat of the 2014 floods,” he said.

Locals complained that despite repeated requests, no visible preventive measures have been taken in their area. “The authorities should act now and something must be done immediately,” a group of residents said.

Officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department earlier said they were monitoring the situation closely and had stationed teams at vulnerable spots. “People are advised to remain cautious and follow advisories. Measures are in place to prevent any major breach,” an official said —(KNO)
