Jhelum rises, no red zone declared yet: officials

Pulwama, Aug 27 : Water level in the Jhelum river rose on Tuesday after days of continuous rainfall, creating flood-like situation  across parts of Kashmir, officials said.

“At Sangam, the water started receding this morning after briefly crossing the flood mark,” said Naziya, Superintending Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Department for Pulwama and Shopian.

She said no red zone had been declared yet.

She added that water levels were likely to rise further downstream at Ram Munshibagh for several hours, depending on the weather.

According to officials, the situation hinges on weather conditions. “If rains continue, the situation will worsen. If the weather holds, water levels will gradually recede,” Naziya said.

Former MP Hasnain Masoodi visited vulnerable sites, including Lethpora, where the river breached its embankments during the 2014 floods.
“Sandbagging is underway at vulnerable spots along the Jhelum to prevent any breach,” Masoodi said, adding that essential services were in place to respond to emergencies.

He said there was no clarity on the ongoing communication outage in the Valley but expressed hope it would be restored by tonight.

“We have two to three vulnerable spots between Awantipora and Sambora – including Lethpora, Alochibagh and Sambora – where preventive work is being carried out,” he added.(GK)
