Young Kashmiri shawl seller allegedly assaulted in Gurugram

A young Kashmiri shawl seller was allegedly assaulted inside a residential society in Gurugram while trying to earn his livelihood.

A video of the incident that has gone viral shows the youth beaten up and the attacker accusing him of “barging” into the society without permission.

As per reports, the youth was beaten and harassed, reportedly targeted solely because of his religious identity.

The incident has left him traumatised and sparked outrage on social media.

Several users on social media questioned the role of the society’s security guards, accusing them of failing to protect the victim and instead allowing the assault to take place. “A young Kashmiri Muslim youth, trying to earn a livelihood, was allegedly beaten and harassed just because he is Muslim.

But don’t call this terrorism,” wrote Mohammed Haroon.

Political voices also condemned the assault. Muzaffar Shah, senior vice-president of the Awami National Conference, said, “This is not just an attack on a Kashmiri Muslim youth in Gurugram but an attack on our shared humanity. We condemn this act of hatred and demand accountability from those who failed to protect him. Hate cannot define our nation, not anymore.”

Another user posted on X, tagging police and journalists, demanding action, “A young Kashmiri Muslim youth trying to make a living, beaten up, traumatised because he is Muslim. Why not haul up the security of the society? Why beat up someone just because he is Mohammedan?”

The Gurugram Police has not yet issued an official statement on the incident.
