Farooq Abdullah Calls Nowgam Blast a ‘Serious Lapse’, Seeks Thorough Probe

Srinagar, Nov 15 : National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Saturday expressed strong concern over the accidental blast at Nowgam Police Station, calling it a grave lapse in handling sensitive explosive material and urging a thorough investigation into the tragedy that claimed nine lives.

Reacting to the incident, Abdullah told reporters that the explosives recovered in the ongoing probe should have been assessed by experts instead of being handled without specialised guidance. “This is our mistake.

Those who understand this explosive better, we should have talked to them first about how to deal with it instead of trying to handle it ourselves. You saw the result. Nine people lost their lives,” he said.

He said that the explosion caused extensive damage not only to the police station but also to nearby houses, adding that such an incident should never have occurred.

Referring to the recent Delhi blast case, Farooq Abdullah said Kashmiris have once again become targets of suspicion. “We haven’t come out of the crisis in Delhi where fingers are being pointed at every Kashmiri.

When will that day come when they will accept that we are Indians and we are not responsible for this? he said.

He also questioned the circumstances that led the arrested doctors to take the path they allegedly chose. “Ask those who are responsible why these doctors had to take this path. What was the reason? There is a need for a thorough investigation and study of this,” Abdullah added.

The NC chief conveyed condolences to the bereaved families and said accountability must follow to prevent such tragedies from recurring. [KNT]
