Ruhullah Mehdi Sets December 20 Deadline for Reservation Resolution

SRINAGAR: Member of Parliament from Srinagar, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, on Monday expressed strong concern over the prolonged uncertainty faced by aspiring youth, urging the government to immediately resolve the pending matter affecting students across Jammu Kashmir.

In a post on X, Ruhullah Mehdi questioned what it would take for the authorities to “understand the agony and hopelessness” faced by the youth. He said the continued delay was “suffocating an entire young generation and pushing them to walls,” adding that even the latest case reported at Vaishno Devi University should have opened the government’s eyes to the urgency.

Ruhullah said last year the government had assured a six-month timeline to address the issue, but “those six months have turned into a year.” He added that before the Budgam Assembly election, authorities claimed the matter would be resolved in a few days, “but those few days are now turning into more than a month.”

“Even if they solve this issue sometime in future, which I think is unlikely, what will compensate the years already lost and the vacancies that are gone?” he asked.

He further questioned whether “personal egos” were at play and whether an entire generation was being punished because he had been raising his voice for them. Mehdi said he would withdraw himself from the matter for a month to avoid being seen as an obstacle and urged the government to meet the students and resolve the issue rationally.

Srinagar MP warned that if the issue remains unresolved after the conclusion of the Parliament session on December 20, he would join the students again “the way we did last December,” adding that this time his protest “will not…” be for a day only.
