Omar Abdullah Reaffirms Jantar Mantar Protest for Restoration of Statehood

Srinagar, June 15: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister on Monday reiterated that his government will go ahead with its planned protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on the first day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session to press for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to reporters, Omar Abdullah said there was no change in the plan and that the protest aims to remind the nation of the promise of statehood made in the Supreme Court, Parliament, and various public forums.

The Chief Minister said he recently discussed several issues with Prime Minister , including statehood, Jammu and Kashmir’s financial situation, and measures to accelerate development. He expressed hope that the discussions would benefit the people of the region.

On the reservation issue, Omar Abdullah said the Cabinet Sub-Committee’s report had been forwarded to the Centre through the Lieutenant Governor. He added that the Union Government had sought clarifications, and the Cabinet would soon meet to approve the response before sending it back to New Delhi.

The Chief Minister also announced the appointment of 132 Junior Engineers in the Public Works Department (PWD), stating that their induction would strengthen development work at the grassroots level.

He further said that preparations for Muharram had been underway for the past one-and-a-half months and expressed confidence that people would not face any difficulties. Extending his best wishes to pilgrims undertaking the annual yatra, he hoped they would pray for peace and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir.
