The United States and Iran have announced a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending hostilities across multiple fronts, marking a significant diplomatic breakthrough after months of regional tensions.
According to Iranian officials, the agreement will bring an immediate and permanent end to fighting, including in Lebanon. US President Donald Trump has also announced the lifting of Washington’s naval blockade on Iranian ports and said the Strait of Hormuz will reopen once the agreement is formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.
Qatari mediators are reportedly holding separate meetings with US and Iranian officials in Doha to resolve remaining differences and finalize the text of the agreement.
The awnnouncement has been welcomed by several world leaders, while global markets reacted positively. Oil prices fell and stock markets rallied on expectations of reduced tensions in the Middle East and the reopening of key maritime trade routes.
However, the deal has faced criticism from some Israeli leaders. Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir stated that Israel is not bound by the agreement and insisted that his country would continue to pursue its security objectives. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz also said Israel would maintain its positions in southern Lebanon and respond to any future threats.
Meanwhile, despite hopes for regional stability, violence has not completely ceased. Palestinian media reported that an Israeli strike in central Gaza killed one woman on Monday.
The proposed agreement is expected to be formally signed on Friday, with observers closely watching whether it can lead to a lasting reduction in tensions across the region.
