Srinagar, June 27: Former Union Minister and senior statesman Karan Singh on Saturday called for the early restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, saying that the Central Government has already committed to restoring it.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Srinagar, Singh said that after the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 into two Union Territories, the time has now come to restore its statehood.
“I believe Jammu and Kashmir should regain its statehood. The government has also stated that it will restore it,” he said.
Karan Singh noted that Jammu and Kashmir was once among the country’s largest states and deserved to regain its rightful status.
Emphasising the importance of interfaith harmony, he said that dialogue and mutual respect among followers of different religions are essential for preserving India’s unity and ensuring lasting peace in Kashmir.
He also recalled that his daughter had earlier established a centre in Srinagar dedicated to promoting the ideals of Dara Shikoh and expressed hope that such an institution could be revived with public support.
Appealing to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Singh urged them to strengthen communal harmony, brotherhood and mutual cooperation, saying these values are vital for the region’s progress and the country’s unity.
