Russia, China Block UN Resolution on Strait of Hormuz

United Nations, April 7, 2026 —UNSC failed to adopt a key resolution on reopening the after and used their veto powers to block the proposal.

The resolution, sponsored by , received 11 votes in favor, while two countries abstained and Russia and China voted against it.

The draft resolution aimed to address rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route, amid ongoing conflict involving . However, it stopped short of authorizing the use of force, instead encouraging countries to coordinate defensive naval actions to ensure safe passage of ships.

The vote comes after more than five weeks of war triggered by US-Israeli strikes on Iran, which have disrupted maritime traffic and pushed up global oil prices. Iran has restricted movement through the strait, raising concerns over global energy supplies.

Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, , told the council that ensuring security in the Strait of Hormuz is vital for global economic stability. He warned that any disruption could impact international markets and energy flow.

The revised resolution called on Iran to immediately stop attacks on commercial shipping and uphold freedom of navigation. It also urged renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis peacefully.

Despite compromises in the draft, Russia and China argued that the resolution could escalate tensions rather than ease them, leading to its rejection.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a key chokepoint through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passes, making the situation a major concern for global markets and security.
