HMT Area Residents Face Acute Water, Electricity Crisis

Srinagar, May 19: Renowned social activist on Tuesday voiced serious concern over the worsening drinking water and electricity crisis in the HMT area, alleging administrative failure in ensuring basic public services.

In a statement issued to the press, Ayaz said that residents connected with the Rangil Water Supply Scheme have been facing an acute shortage of drinking water for the past several days. He said the crisis intensified after water supply was suspended for two days on the pretext of maintenance, following which the supply has remained irregular and insufficient.

He stated that the situation has caused immense hardship to local residents, who are struggling to access one of the most essential daily necessities.

Highlighting the power situation, Ayaz said that Feeder-3 at SD Zainakote, once considered among the best-performing feeders due to responsible consumers, has witnessed a sharp decline in service. Despite the completion of cabling and metering works, the area continues to face frequent unscheduled outages, curtailments, and prolonged power cuts, he added.

Ayaz criticized the administration for what he termed as poor monitoring, lack of accountability, and insensitivity towards public grievances. He said the continued failure to provide uninterrupted water and electricity reflects serious administrative shortcomings.

“The worst part is that no one seems to be bothered, and accountability appears to have taken a back seat,” he remarked, adding that the prolonged neglect of essential civic issues has deeply frustrated the residents of the HMT area.

He urged the concerned authorities to immediately restore regular drinking water supply and ensure reliable electricity services in the area, besides fixing responsibility for the alleged mismanagement and inconvenience caused to the public.
